For those with a smaller home gym or that lack a dedicated space for equipment, adjustable dumbbells are an excellent investment. Adjustable dumbbells can replace dozens of individual weight dumbbells with a single compact dumbbell. There are a variety of adjustable dumbbells on the market currently ranging from the Bowflex SelectTech to PowerBlock dumbbells with slick weight switching mechanisms. However, both the Bowflex and PowerBlock dumbbells are expensive and require you to use proprietary parts to maintain or expand the dumbbells. The Yes4All adjustable dumbbells are a great alternative to those that are more frugal and want something simpler. Currently priced at $1 a pound and options ranging from 40-200lbs the Yes4All dumbbells cost a fraction of the competition and offer a simple cast iron weight design.

Adjusting the weight is as simple as spinning the chrome collars off the handles and swapping out the plates. We chose the highest weight option, the 200lb variation that allows an impressive 100lbs per dumbbell. While we’d like to pretend we can curl 100lbs with ease, the truth is that at the time of this review it is difficult to buy any home equipment so when these showed up on Walmart’s website we bought it right before they went out of stock again. The Yes4All dumbbells are 16” wide chrome plated handles and are shipped with 2.5, 5lb and 10lb coated cast iron plates. The added benefit of this design is that you can easily use these cast iron weights on other bars as long as they have the same 1.15” inner diameter.

The Yes4All adjustable dumbbells are affordable dumbbells that offer a simple and reliable design.

UNBOXING

Thankfully for the people who have to deliver the 200lb dumbbells, they are shipped into three separate boxes. Each cardboard box is wrapped with straps and covered in tape to prevent any pieces from falling out. Although the items are well packed, one of our boxes had part of the handle slightly poking out but undamaged. It is a bit of a workout getting everything out of the box, but you’ll find:

  • 4 x 2.5 lb plates
  • 4 x 5 lb plates
  • 16 x 10 lb plates
  • 2 x dumbbell handles
  • 4 x chrome collars
  • 8 x rubber o-rings
  • Instruction manual

Note that the lighter variations would include less 10lb weights. Also, we found the included rubber o-rings all had various thicknesses and slightly different diameters.

FIT & FINISH

While other adjustable dumbbells such as the Bowflex SelectTech and PowerBlock use proprietary weight selection designs, Yes4All has opted for a keep-it-simple-stupid (KISS) approach. The chrome handles have a wide knurled center section and a threaded design on each end to accept the cast iron plates. With a 1.5” diameter the dumbbells are easy to hold and look and feel well designed. As with any adjustable dumbbell these are fairly bulky though with the handle being 16” wide. Whether you get the 200lb or lower weight variations, each dumbbell comes with two 2.5 and 5lb weights and a variable number of 10lb plates to achieve the maximum weight.

Yes4All Adjustable Dumbbells
Instead of complicated weight switching mechanisms, the dumbbells use a simple spin collar.

The combination of the handlebars and collars weighs about 5lbs, which means with the provided weights you can easily go up from 5lbs to 100lbs per dumbbell in 5lb increments. Each of the provided spin collars also have set screws that help keep them in place, particularly with higher weights. We found that the collars worked well as long as they are tightened down with the set screws. However, switching between weights is a bit time consuming as the handles are fairly long. That means you’ll want to structure your workout to use the same weight ranges instead of doing circuit workouts that require fast switches between low/high weights. In hindsight, we’d highly recommend buying two sets of the dumbbells at lower weights. This would allow you to have two sets of handles for the same price and give you much more versatility.

Yes4All Adjustable Dumbbells - coating
The coating on the cast iron plates is a bit inconsistent not very thick.

The finish on the dumbbells is actually impressive given the budget price. On our set, there were no sharp edges on any of the threads and the chrome finish looks shiny and even. The cast iron weights have black coating on them as well to protect them from the elements. We found that the surface finish was a bit inconsistent though, as some of the weights are bumpy or had rough patches on them. Also, after a few weeks of use on concrete the coasting is starting to show through on the outer edges. This also brings up one disadvantage of the round plate design, they love to roll. If you have an uneven surface, the weights will quickly roll off unless you position them carefully which is one reason we prefer squared off designs.

USABILITY

As we touched on before, the big drawback with the Yes4All dumbbells is the simple collar design that makes switching between weights a bit annoying. However, once in place the collars hold well and with the wide weight range we were able to do everything from toning exercises to high weight bench pressing variations. Compared to the individual weights at your local gym though, adjustable weights can be cumbersome to use. The wide 16” handles of the Yes4All adjustable dumbbells are bulky and at weights under 30lbs the dumbbells are a lot larger than an equivalent individual weight. This means that it can be difficult to get full extension on some workouts such as curls due to the size. Also for workouts that require resting the weights on your legs to position yourself (i.e. bench pressing) the protruding handles and collars make it difficult to balance compared to the flat sides of individual dumbbells. We found that the dumbbells worked great with the Flybird adjustable workout bench for making a great budget home gym as well.

THE VERDICT

Overall, we found the Yes4All adjustable dumbbells are affordable and very versatile workout equipment. With a retail price at only $1 per pound, the dumbbells cost far less than competitors such as Bowflex or PowerBlock. The cheaper price does mean they don’t have a quick weight changing design though, and instead rely on spin collars that can be time consuming to switch. The fit and finish of the dumbbells is impressive for the price and with the simple design these are a set of dumbbells you can use for many years to come. Our advice would be to purchase two lighter weight sets so that you’d have a second set of handles or purchase compatible 1.15” bars to use with the cast iron plates. Particularly with the 200lb variation, these adjustable dumbbells offer an impressive range of 5-100lb per dumbbell  without the need for dozens of individual dumbbells. If you’re looking to setup or expand your home gym and want a versatile set of adjustable dumbbells, the Yes4Alls are a great option.
