Bryton’s updates their top-of-the-line cycling computer

Bryton Rider S810 GPS Color Cycling Computer Review

While Bryton is best known as a budget friendly cycling computer maker, their sport S series has been their premium lineup. The new Rider S810 is the latest iteration of their top-of-the-line S series computer and combines a massive 3.5” color touch screen with the latest technology. With a retail price of $299.95, the Rider S810 offers high-end features that are designed to compete with Wahoo and Garmin at a more affordable price point. The S810 features a number of upgrades from the S800 including a curved glass display and Climb Challenge 2.0 with real-time climb profiles. One of the newest features is the integration of Strava Live segments which is the first time we’ve seen the feature on a Bryton computer.

The Bryton Rider S810 GPS combines a large and vibrant color touch screen with an intuitive user interface.

UNBOXING

The Bryton Rider S810 comes in a compact cardboard box with a glossy graphic of the computer on the exterior. Inside the box you’ll find:

Bryton only includes their simple plastic handlebar mount with the computer and not an out-front mount.

MOUNTING

As with the other S-series computers, Bryton has designed the S810 with a removable Bryton mount on the bottom. It’s nearly identical to a Garmin quarter turn mount, but has slightly thicker tabs which can damage a Garmin mount over time. You can either use a Bryton specific mount like those offered by KOM or the Bryton Sport Mount. The mount can also be replaced with an optional Garmin mount by removing the four screws and swapping the mount out. It’s a nice feature that lets you use the S810 with standard Garmin mounts and something we’d recommend as there are limited Bryton mounts on the market. Once the computer is locked into place on a mount there is almost no play despite the plastic mount construction. Note, the Garmin adapter is specific to the S810 and not interchangeable with the S510’s adapter.

As with other S series computers, you can replace the default Bryton mount with an optional Garmin mount by removing four screws.

FIT & FINISH

Visually, the Bryton S810 continues the S series lineup premium design with smooth curved edges and a slim profile. The large 3.5” screen makes the S810 one of the largest Bryton offers and matches Garmin’s top offerings. With this latest iteration, Bryton has reduced the bezel size and added curved glass at the edges of the screen to help give the S810 an even more premium look and feel. Compared to the previous S800 with a flat screen and plastic edges, the curved screen gives the S810 a high-end look that matches today’s top cell phones. The computer also has a nice weight to it with mostly black exterior and a gray accent line around the sides instead of the previous white.

As far as branding, there is a large Bryton logo on the front edge and below the screen. Despite being a touch screen design, Bryton has retained four physical buttons with two labeled buttons on each side of the computer. The labels have clear icons printed on the bezel of the screen next to the button which makes them easy to identify and use. The edges of the computer are also rounded to give it a slimmer appearance with overall dimensions being only 102.5 x 57.6 x 15.8mm. On the rear edge of the computer there is a rubber cover that protects a USB-C charging port and a small cutout to place safety lanyard.

USER INTERFACE

Bryton has also improved the user interface of the S810 by incorporating the updated software we’ve seen on the S510 as well as more features. The menu design is intuitive with a simple home page that lets you switch between bike profiles and a gear icon for settings as well as courses for navigation and workouts. You use a combination of touch and physical buttons to operate the computer with a majority of the interface driven through touch. The large screen is bright and responsive to swipes and presses which makes it easy to use. On the riding page you have a multi-page display that can show maps, data and graphical views.

Bryton has added a curved glass screen to the S810 which gives it a high-end look and feel.

The screen layouts and data fields are highly customizable through the Bryton Active app and can even be adjusted on the data pages by doing a long hold on a field and then tapping. There is also a quick status screen that can be accessed by tapping on the riding views which brings up an overlay that you can also customize with whatever data you want such as backlight control, data fields and time. The quick-access popup is a nice way to quickly access less frequent data or to quickly check the time without sacrificing a data field. Swiping up from the bottom of the screen takes you back to the home page and is also quite responsive. You can access all the functions and features while a ride is active by either returning to the main page or pausing the recording.

CLIMB CHALLENGE 2.0

As a part of the updates to the S810, Bryton has brought over their Climb Challenge 2.0 feature that was introduced in the Bryton Rider S510. This is similar to Wahoo’s Summit Freeride and Garmin’s ClimbPro which provide climb profiles for pre-loaded routes as well as in real-time based on your current heading. For preloaded routes you can adjust the climb start/stop locations via the Bryton Active App. With the real-time mode, the only option is to adjust the sensitivity of what is identified as a climb on the app with the start and stop locations automatically determined. The Climb Challenge 2.0 feature alone is well worth the upgrade from the Bryton Rider S800 as you can see a real-time display of the upcoming road and modulate your effort accordingly. Note, when there is no climb detected the climb page will still show an elevation chart for your current route even if it is a descent.

The S810 not only has Strava Live Segments, but it also has Climb Challenge 2.0 which shows real-time climb profiles with or without a route loaded.

BRYTON ACTIVE APP

To fully take advantage of the Bryton S810 you’ll need to download the Bryton Active app. Once you’ve gone through the mandatory Bryton registration and logged into your account, you’ll see a simple black / green skinned interface with four buttons on the bottom. The bottom navigation buttons allow you to review and analyze previous activities, set up workouts or routes, adjust your user profile, and configure any connected Bryton computers. The app is fairly straightforward and has many of the features you’d expect to find on a cycling app such as calendar activity views and the ability to link third-party apps such as Strava, Komoot and Ride With GPS to upload ride information.

Unlike the lower end Bryton devices such as the Bryton Rider 17 where you primarily use the app for third party linking and GPS configuration, with the S810 you can take advantage of all of the features. That includes route importing / creation, group ride / chat and setting up workouts. Aside from that, the app is great for configuring the screen display. You can enable/disable pages, reorder them and reconfigure each data field. As you would expect for the S series of computers, the S810 supports graphical views like radial displays and curves which are great for showing speed, power or cadence. The S810 also supports electronic groupsets and just about every variation of power data displays.

The S810 is also one of the first Bryton computers to support Strava Live segments which is a rare feature to see outside of mainstream brands. To use the feature you’ll need a premium Strava account synced to your Bryton app. Once that is setup you can view the available segments via a live segment page on the app. With the third-party account linking, that lets you view real-time performance on a segment on the S810 as well as upload your results directly to Strava post ride to compare your performance and share your results.

RIDING IMPRESSIONS

The Bryton Rider S800 was one of our favorite GPS cycling computers to ride with as the large screen let you see all your data in one place while the navigation has always been reliable. With the updated Rider S810, Bryton has retained all the features and qualities we liked and simply improved things. The 3.5” screen is still bright and responsive with vivid colors and a built-in light sensor to allow the backlight to automatically adjust to the environment.  Using the computer is simple and straightforward with clearly labeled and large touch points on the main screen and a wide range of data field options on the riding page. Bryton has streamlined all the common tasks such as one-button starting or stopping a ride via the dedicated physical button and the convenient quick status popup that can be accessed from any riding page.

Bryton’s navigation is also one of the most reliable we’ve used with clear prompts that show a graphic of the intersection and a detailed map. Unlike the iGPSPORT IGS800 which has artificial zoom limits and a navigation algorithm that is easily confused, the S810 lets you zoom all the way out to a continent view and hasn’t let us down. Only true turns are marked as turns and the algorithm is smart enough to handle loading a route mid-route and routes that overlap. We were not able to take advantage of the Strava Live Segments as we do not have a Strava subscription, but we’re happy to see Bryton make the feature available outside of Wahoo / Garmin computers.

THE VERDICT

Overall, we found the Bryton Rider S810 to be an intuitive and responsive cycling computer. Bryton has taken their previous S800 and updated the hardware and software with their latest features such as Climb Challenge 2.0 and Strava Live Segment support. The S810 retains its large 3.5” screen which has bright colors and flexible layouts that let you see everything on one page. We were impressed with the updated curved glass display which gives the computer a high-end look and feel. Also, the navigation and user interface is still one of the best on the market with streamlined controls and large touch targets. As far as negatives, the S810 lacks training metric displays and the Garmin adapter has to be purchased separately and can be hard to find. That said, the Bryton S810 is a top-of-the-line cycling computer with a premium look and feel at a fraction of the price of competitors.
