The ultimate Keo Blade pedals

LOOK Keo Blade Ceramic Vision Clipless Cycling Pedal Review

LOOK has been experimenting with integrated lights in their pedals since their commuting Geo pedal line up. That’s why it isn’t a surprise that they’ve added the technology to their top of the line LOOK Keo Blade Ceramic pedals with this latest Vision variation. This takes the latest Blade pedal design and adds removable rear LED lights to the rear of each pedal for additional daytime and nighttime visibility. Retail price for the Keo Blade Ceramic Vision pedals is $325 which is a $50 premium over the standard Keo Blade Ceramic pedals. The Vision light adapters have a tab style attachment mechanism and daytime bright 60 lumen output. Note, there is also a $79 upgrade kit to add Vision lights to 4th generation Blade pedals.

UNBOXING

The LOOK Keo Blade Ceramic Vision pedals come in a glossy cardboard box with a large center cutout that shows the pedal body. Stripes of blue, red and yellow add a splash of color to the otherwise black and white branding. Inside the box you’ll find:

Although LOOK missed an opportunity to show off the taillights with a side box cutout, they do include a clever split charging cable that lets you charge both Vision lights using the same USB outlet.

FIT & FINISH

Visually, the LOOK Keo Blade Vision pedals look almost identical to the standard Blade pedals. It’s the same wide platform that LOOK Keo are known for with a strong and secure retention system. What makes the Blade pedals unique from other LOOK Keo pedals is the carbon blade retention system that uses a rectangular carbon fiber piece instead of a traditional spring system. It’s a clever design that results in a lighter and more aerodynamic pedal shape. The only downside of this system is that the tension is not adjustable, instead you have to swap the carbon blades with different tension versions which are about $55 each.

The clip on design of the Vision lights means it is not compatible with older pedal designs but it is a feature we expect LOOK to integrate into future variations. Note, LOOK also offers the Vision lights as a $79 upgrade kit for 4th generation or Blade Power pedals. The main difference between the Blade Vision pedals and the standard Blade pedals is the rear lever. With the Vision version, the rear lever has a special center cutout to accommodate the Vision light tab. The Vision lights are a simple clip-on design that hooks on the bottom edge of the pedal and into the special cutout to hold them securely in place. Note, the Vision lights themselves are the same one found on the LOOK Keo 2 Max as the lights were designed to not be model specific.

The Keo Blade Ceramic has a two piece design with a special rear attachment that has slots to accommodate the Vision lights.

LOOK has designed the lights to be symmetric so they are not side specific for easier usability. The lights have a COB LED design with a curved face that sits flush against the body and extends out 0.75” or 19 mm. It’s a simple design with a red tinted lens and curved body for improved side visibility. Once you remove the lights from the pedals you’ll find a rubber cover that protects the USB-C charging port. There is also a simple battery status LED indicator next to the wide power button on each Vision light.

Each Vision light has a USB-C port in the rear to charge each individual light.

LIGHT OUTPUT

The LOOK Keo Blade Ceramic Vision pedals have four output modes with two constant modes and two flash modes. There is a low mode with 2 lumen and 10 hour runtime and a brighter high mode with 3 lumen and 5 hour runtime. For maximum runtime, there is an eco flash mode that is 10 lumens and has 39 hour runtime. The most popular mode though is the daytime flash which is the full 60 lumen output and has an impressive 10.5 hour runtime. They are surprisingly bright with great side visibility thanks to the curved body. LOOK has also incorporated a motion sensor into the pedal which automatically puts the pedals in a sleep mode if no motion is detected.

The Vision attachments have a surprisingly bright 60 lumen COB LED strips with a curved lens for improved side visibility.

They automatically turn back on if motion is detected which means you don’t need to really interact with the pedals during short stops. After 30 minutes, the pedals automatically shut off completely to preserve the battery. At this time there is no ANT+ syncing or pedal to pedal syncing which means you do need to turn each pedal light on and off manually. It’s fairly easy to do with the wide power button but given all the electronics on the bike we would have liked to see some integration feature. Next to the button is a single LED which flashes to indicate sleep mode and the battery status.

Double pressing the button activates the battery status which turns the light either green or red if under 30%.  Under 30% battery will turn the indicator a flashing red while under 15% is a solid red. We were impressed with the brightness of the COB LEDs which lack the traditional focused LED found on brighter taillights like the Trek Flare R. The biggest downside to the Vision pedals is the lack of synchronization (i.e. Lumos Firefly lights) or communication to GPS head units to allow the lights to automatically be turned on or off rather than doing it individually. Due to this manual setup, it’s very hard to get the flash modes to be synchronized between the pedals.

THE VERDICT

Overall, we found the LOOK Keo Blade Ceramic Vision pedals to be stable, fast and bright. LOOK has taken their top-of-the-line Keo Blade Ceramic pedals and added a clever Vision rear light attachment. The small yet bright 60 lumen light is daytime bright and easy to remove from the pedals with a clip-on style mount. As with the standard Blade pedals, they are lightweight and stable for high effort sprints or long climbs. Thanks to Biomotion, the physical pedal movement during a pedal stroke, the Vision lights provide even more visibility than static taillights and help you stay safe on the road. The big downside for these pedals is that the Vision pedals lack Bluetooth or ANT+ connectivity to synchronize power on/off or connect to a GPS head unit. That said, the LOOK Keo Blade Ceramic Vision takes the already impressive Blade pedals and adds additional safety with the Vision lights.
