LOOK has been experimenting with integrated lights in their pedals since their commuting Geo pedal line up. That’s why it isn’t a surprise that they’ve added the technology to one of their most popular pedals, the LOOK Keo 2 Max. The new LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision adds a detachable rear LED light to the pedals for daytime and nighttime visibility. Note, these pedals are actually a different model from the standard Keo 2 Max pedals as they use a different rear clip. Retail price for the LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision pedals is $175 which is $85 more than the standard pedals. The Vision adapters are 60 lumen red lights with a clip-on style attachment to the rear of the pedal and a hidden USB-C port for charging.

The LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision pedals take LOOK’s popular pedals and add bright red 60 lumen LEDs to improve safety and visibility.

UNBOXING

The LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision pedals come in a glossy cardboard box with a large center cutout that shows the pedal body. Stripes of blue, red and yellow add a splash of color to the otherwise black and white branding. Inside the box you’ll find:

  • LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision pedals w/ Vision lights installed
  • Gray Keo cleats (4.5 degree float) w/ hardware
  • Instruction manual
  • USB-C charging cable w/ split output

Although LOOK missed an opportunity to show off the taillights with a side box cutout, they do include a clever split charging cable that lets you charge both Vision lights using the same USB outlet.

FIT & FINISH

Visually, the LOOK Keo 2 Max pedals look almost identical to the standard Keo 2 Max pedals. It’s the same wide platform that LOOK Keo are known for with a strong and secure spring retention system. These are one of the most affordable performance road cycling that LOOK offers, with only the Classic 3 pedals being priced lower. What makes these pedals different from the standard LOOK Keo 2 Max pedals is the rear clip. Instead of a smooth rear, the Vision has a special rear clip with a thicker clip that has a cutout to accommodate the Vision lights.

The lights themselves seem to be identical to the LOOK Keo Blade Vision version, but LOOK does not currently sell the lights by themselves or offer an upgrade kit to convert existing Keo 2 Max pedals to add lights. That means you do need to buy these pedals with the lights if you want this feature. However, we suspect LOOK will incorporate the Vision clips into future pedal versions to make the lights a simple add-on in the future. The pedals retain the same adjustable tension. While the pedals look good with or without the Vision lights attached, there is no tension indicator as you would find in the standard pedals.

LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision Clipless Cycling Pedal Review - Removable Design
The Vision pedals have a different rear piece which has a slot for the Vision light adapters.

The Vision lights are a simple clip-on design that hooks on the bottom edge of the pedal and into the special cutout to hold them securely in place. You simply slide them down onto the pedal and then push them toward the pedal for them to clip in. Removing the lights requires pushing down on the top lever to tilt the light off the clip and then pull upward to unhook it. LOOK has designed the lights to be symmetric so they are not side specific for easier usability. The lights have a COB LED design with a curved face that sits flush against the body and extends out 0.75” or 19 mm. It’s a simple design with a red tinted lens and curved body for improved side visibility.

Each light has a removable piece with a USB-C port hidden in the rear and a tab button on the top for removing it from the pedal body.

LIGHT OUTPUT

The LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision pedals have four output modes with two constant modes and two flash modes. There is a low mode with 2 lumen and 10 hour runtime and a brighter high mode with 3 lumen and 5 hour runtime. For maximum runtime, there is an eco flash mode that is 10 lumens and has 39 hour runtime. The most popular mode though is the daytime flash which is the full 60 lumen output and has an impressive 10.5 hour runtime. They are surprisingly bright with great side visibility thanks to the curved body. LOOK has also incorporated a motion sensor into the pedal which automatically puts the pedals in a sleep mode if no motion is detected.

LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision Clipless Cycling Pedal Review - COB LED
The Vision adapters have an attractive COB LED stripe with bright 60 lumen output.

They automatically turn back on if motion is detected which means you don’t need to really interact with the pedals during short stops. After 30 minutes, the pedals automatically shut off completely to preserve the battery. At this time there is no ANT+ syncing or pedal to pedal syncing which means you do need to turn each pedal light on and off manually. It’s fairly easy to do with the wide power button but given all the electronics on the bike we would have liked to see some integration feature. Next to the button is a single LED which flashes to indicate sleep mode and the battery status.

Double pressing the button activates the battery status which turns the light either green or red if under 30%.  Under 30% battery will turn the indicator a flashing red while under 15% is a solid red. We were impressed with the brightness of the COB LEDs which lack the traditional focused LED found on brighter taillights like the Trek Flare R. The biggest downside to the Vision pedals is the lack of synchronization (i.e. Lumos Firefly lights) or communication to GPS head units to allow the lights to automatically be turned on or off rather than doing it individually. Due to this manual setup, it’s very hard to get the flash modes to be synchronized between the pedals.

THE VERDICT

Overall, we found the LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision pedals to be a welcome upgrade to LOOK’s most popular pedals. LOOK was able to take the Keo 2 Max pedals and modify the rear piece to attach the bright 60 lumen Vision adapters. Installation and removal of the lights is simple, and they are surprisingly bright with a wide COB LED stripe. We found the combination of Biomotion with the pedal movement and the daytime flash to be a great way to improve our visibility during the day or night. LOOK has also added a simple battery status checker and long runtimes to ensure the lights can be used on centuries or all-day rides without needing to be recharged. As far as improvements, we’d really like to see synchronization or communication with GPS head units to make power on and off faster and easier. That said, the LOOK Keo 2 Max Vision are excellent clipless pedals with added illumination to improve safety.
