UNBOXING

The Magicshine Seemee 50 Pro taillight comes in compact black cardboard boxes with Magicshine branding and specs printed onto it. Inside the box you’ll find:

Note, you’ll need to purchase a separate FTR LightSync remote and compatible headlight to take advantage of synchronized power on/off feature.

MOUNTING

The Magicshine Seemee 50 Pro uses an updated two piece mount design for attaching onto bikes. Molded onto the rear of the light body is a slotted extension piece which locks into a matching seatpost mount holder. Inside both the Seemee 50 Pro and the mount are magnets which allows attract each other and make it slightly easier to attach the taillight. However, you still need to slide it onto the mount unlike the snap-on design of the Seemee 50 Mag so the magnetic design doesn’t add much value. For the seatpost mount, there are two included rubber adapters: a thin one for round seat posts and a deep V shaped version for aero seatposts. Oddly, Magicshine has used a two-sided top on the rubber adapters which means you can’t really switch between mounts without damaging the tape. Magicshine also sells a magnetic saddle rail mount and a Brompton specific version which also have a combination of the magnet and slide on tab design.

FIT & FINISH

Visually, the Magicshine Seemee 50 Pro is almost identical to the standard Seemee 50 with a thin and tall form factor. It’s a striking design that has a black base and extended clear lens when the light is off that tucks behind seat posts or saddle rails. The dimensions of the taillight are 65 x 14 x 26 mm or 2.5 x 0.5 x 1 inches with a rectangular profile. It’s a plastic taillight with a simple black base that has Magicshine and Seemee 50 branding printed on it. On the backside you have a slot style extension with a rubber cover in the center that conceals the USB-C charging port. Unlike the standard Seemee 50 taillight, there are no hooks built into the body of the taillight which gives the Pro a cleaner appearance.

Magicshine has utilized a two piece mount with a magnet integrated into the body for faster mounting.

Magicshine refers to the lens design as Optilumin and it’s one of the most unique features of the Seemee 50 lights. The COB LEDs are arranged in a two column grid in the center of the light with a transparent lens above it. With the light off it almost looks like a clear window but if you look closely you can see there are grooves cut into the edges and along the top and bottom of the lens to direct the light. The magic comes when you turn the light on as the lens reflects the LEDs and gives the taillight a COB LED border effect while still directing a majority of the light backwards for visibility. It’s a cool design that results in excellent side visibility as the edges of the lens appear to be illuminated.

One of the best updates of the Pro version is the four LED battery indicator which provides more information about the battery state.

USER INTERFACE

The user interface of the taillight is a wide single button on the left side which looks like a basic plastic button but is actually illuminated. Pressing the button while the light is off illuminates up to 4 LEDs which gives you a clear and easy to understand battery status along with different colors. It’s a big upgrade from the standard multi-color indicator most of the other Magicshine lights use which typically bundle 20-100% into one color. With the four LEDs you have more granularity so you can make sure there is enough battery for longer rides. Otherwise, the user interface has a simple one level menu design with a single press to cycle through the five available modes. There is also a lockout feature that can be activated by holding the button with the light off which ensures the taillight does not turn on while in a backpack or while traveling.

SMART FEATURES

The Magicshine Seemee 50 Pro is also part of Magicshine’s FTR LightSync Control compatible taillights. It uses bluetooth to sync the taillight with Magicshine’s FTR LightSync remote so you can turn on a headlight and taillight at the same time. It’s a convenient feature that gives you one button power on and power off instead of having to turn on each light separately. The Seemee 50 Pro does not include the remote, so you’d need to purchase a compatible remote and headlight like the Hori series.

Once you have the remote and have completed the simple pairing process you can hold the button on the remote down to power on a single headlight and taillight combination. The Seemee 50 Pro also features Magicshine’s PeltonSync which is a group sync feature that matches the flash pattern of nearby compatible taillights. That means if you have another Seemee 50 within a close distance and in the same mode, the taillight automatically synchronizes. It’s a great feature if you ride with a partner or in a group as the synchronized flashing improves your visibility on the road.

LIGHT OUTPUT

The Magicshine Seemee 50 Pro is programmed with five output modes. There are two constant modes: low (6 lumen / 6.5 hr runtime) and a high (15 lumen / 3 hr) that are convenient for nighttime riding. There is an additional night flash that alternates between low / high modes and had a 4.5 hr runtime. The brightest mode is the daytime flash which outputs the full 50 lumen and has an 8.5 runtime that is visible even in full daytime sun. For extended runtime, there is also an eco flash mode that has a 0/3/0/3/10 lumen alternating pattern and impressive 30 hour runtime. All the output modes illuminate the COB LEDs in unison with no animated options like you’d find on larger lights like the KNOG Blinder Traffic. Note, all the output modes are the same as the standard Seemee 50 with slightly lower runtimes to the smaller battery.

The taillight uses Magicshine’s Optilumin lens design that combines two columns of COB LEDs with a clear lens that reflects the light.

While the Seemee 50 Pro is far from the brightest light in Magicshine’s Seemee product line, the lens design gives it a unique appearance when it is on or off. It’s an attractive design that also creates excellent side visibility as the entire lens is illuminated and reflects the LEDs at the edges. The lack of a focused LED means the visibility of th Seemee 50 Pro isn’t has good as lights such as the Bontrager Flare RT, Moon Sports Helix Sense 300 or Seemee 200 but it is still sufficient for commuting or road biking. We also found the mount worked well on both aero and round seat posts with a stable and secure fit.

THE VERDICT

Overall, we found the Magicshine Seemee 50 Pro to be a bright and clever bike taillight. Magicshine has taken their popular and affordable Seemee 50 and upgraded it with a multi-LED battery status indicator along with a multi-piece magnetic mount. The Pro’s four LED indicator provides more granularity than Magicshine’s standard multi-color single LED indicators. Additionally, the multi-piece mount provides additional mounting configurations including optional saddle rail and Brompton applications. We were impressed with the OptiLumin lens design which creates a unique appearance and enhances the COB LEDs. As far as negatives, we found that the magnetic part of the mount does add much value and didn’t like the double sided tape used to attach rubber pads to the seatpost mount. That said, the Magicshine Seemee 50 Pro is an affordable and unique looking bike taillight.
