MOUNTING
One of the big features of the Seemee 50 is the magnetic mounting design. The lights have a three piece mount that consists of a seatpost or saddle mount, magnetic light holder base and the light itself. Attached to the bike is a rubber strap and plastic mount which has a miniaturized Garmin mount integrated into it. It’s the same mount that is included with most of the Seemee lights and provides a familiar quarter-turn lock mechanism. What’s unique about the Seemee 50 Mag is the plastic holder that locks onto the mount and has magnetics built into it. The magnets along with these small tabs lock the Seemee 50 Mag in place.
Unlike the Lumos Firefly which can only be attached in two specific orientations, the Seemee 50 Mag can be attached in any orientation which makes it even easier to use. Removing the Seemee 50 Mag from the holder requires pulling back on the tabs and then pulling the light off. This combination of a Garmin mount, magnets and physical tabs ensure you never have to worry about the lights coming loose. Magicshine also includes a saddle mount and zip ties which gives you even more options for mounting. If you have a compatible Lumos helmet you can simply attach the Seemee 50 Mag directly onto it. Otherwise, the magnetic design and additional base and holder design don’t add much value compared to the other Seemee lights.
FIT & FINISH
Visually, the Seemee 50 Mag has a compact square shape with a large clear lens. The light has an Altezza style which means it looks white when the light is off and only reveals its color when the LEDs are on. The Seemee 50 Mag can be used as either a headlight or tail light as the lights have two sets of COB LEDs in each color. You can see the two sets of LEDs if you look closely with a slightly yellow outer ring for the white LEDs and a clear inner ring for the red LEDs. The light is constructed from mostly plastic with a black rubber button at the center of the lens. Branding is limited to a subtle Magicshine logo on the back of the light which isn’t visible while the light is mounted.
If you’re familiar with the Lumos Firefly lights and the review we did of them you may also notice that the Seemee 50 Mag is quite similar. That isn’t a coincidence as Magicshine helped Lumos develop those lights which is why the Seemee 50 Mag can be used directly on Lumos helmets. The Magicshine Seemee 50 Mag is a more affordable version of the Lumos Firefly with some distinct feature differences like the lack of a focused LED, simplified mounting and USB-C charging. Rather than using a proprietary magnetic charger, these lights have a standard USB-C port on the back of the light which lets you use any standard cable to charge them.

In terms of light output, the Seemee 50 Mag uses a ring of COB LEDs in both a white and red color. The COB LEDs are spaced closely together in a circular pattern which creates a uniform glow that illuminates the Seemee 50 Mag from any angle. Raised edges with reflective surfaces help diffuse the light at the edges of the lens as it helps the entire lens illuminate. Unlike the Lumos Firefly, these lights have no focused high-output LEDs which mean they don’t have great long-distance visibility. Instead, the COB LEDs create a nice glow that is more of a “be-seen” style illuminate for urban riding or closer distance. The Seemee 50 is capable of 50 lumen output with two constant modes and three flash options that can be used during the day or night.

USER INTERFACE
There is a single power button placed at the center of the Seemee 50 to control the light. The one button interface is backlit to be green, flashing red or red to indicate the current battery state. A single press while the light is off displays the color-coded battery status while a long hold turns the light on or off. With the light on, a single press cycles through the five different modes while a double press switches between the red taillight mode and the white headlight mode. The Seemee 50 Mag also utilizes Magicshine’s FTR LightSync technology which means you can pair it with other FTR enabled Magicshine lights like the Allty 1200U. Once paired with a remote, you can turn a headlight and the Seemee 50 on or off with a single button press. To change the mode of the taillight when it is synced you still use the single or double press interactions on the light itself as the remote will only change the paired headlight.
LIGHT OUTPUT
Magicshine programs the Seemee 50 Mag with five output modes which includes two constant modes and three flash options. The modes are the same between the red taillight mode and the white headlight mode but have different run times due to differences in the LED efficiency. The constant modes are a 6 lumen low (9 hr in red taillight mode / 13.5 hr in white headlight mode) and a 15 lumen high (5 hr / 7.5 hr). As far as flash modes, there is a 1-15 lumen night flash mode (9.5 hr / 14 hr) which ramps up and down in intensity. The brightest flash mode is daytime flash with 50 lumen output (12.5 hr / 18.5 hr) and decent visibility even in the bright sun. Finally, there is a 3-3-15 lumen eco flash which provides the longest runtime (26.5 hr/ 28.5 hr).

With the small size of the Seemee 50 Mag lights and 50 lumen output, we’d classify the light as a “be-seen” style light. As a headlight, the COB LEDs do not illuminate the road and are only intended to ensure other people see you on the road, we’d recommend something brighter like the Allty 800 for those looking for a compact headlight. We were impressed with the lens design which makes the most of the COB LEDs and reflects the light on the clear lens to provide excellent side visibility. The lack of focused LEDs on these lights is a big drawback though, as they are not that visible from further distances. However, given the low price and compact size the compromise makes sense.
THE VERDICT
Overall, we found the Magicshine Seemee 50 Mag to be compact and full-featured bike lights. With their dual functionality as a headlight or a taillight, it’s easy to swap the Seemee 50 Mag from a taillight to a headlight. Magicshine has addressed many of the downsides of the Lumos Firefly such as magnetic charging and expensive price and created these simplified Seemee 50 Mag lights. The Seemee 50 Mag retains the magnetic mounting which is perfect for Lumos helmets but also simplified the mounts to use a combination of magnets and physical tabs to hold them in place. As far as negatives, the magnetic mounting doesn’t have many benefits outside of Lumos helmet use and there are no focused LEDs for long distance visibility. That said, the Magicshine Seemee 50 Mag is an interesting addition to Magicshine’s Seemee lineup.
