Subscription boxes have been a big hit with companies offering curated boxes for everything from makeup and Japanese candy. In this review, we’ll be looking at fuel goods The RiderBox which are curated boxes with 10-12 items specifically targeted toward cyclists. It’s easy to see the appeal of the concept as you’ll receive a box of surprise items that include nutritional products and accessories. Retail price on the boxes ranges from $42 when purchased individually down to $32 with an annual subscription. The boxes are sent bi-monthly with the 6 month or 1-year subscription options and include approximately 10-12 items per box. Each box is hand curated and comes with a MVP pricing discount for the entire product lineup on fuel goods website.

UNBOXING
Visually, the box itself has a bright green and orange color scheme with branding printed on to it. The shopping label is attached directly onto the box so there is no guessing about what is inside the box when you receive it. Once you open the lid you’ll find fun graphics and a sticker holding the cover in place. After that is removed you’ll see the assortment of 10-12 items which will vary throughout the year as fuel goods brings on new companies or swaps out products. One of the best features of the box is that you get a fueling guide which describes each product in detail. They include why the product was chosen and helpful hints on how to use them to get the most out of it.
The retail price and discounted MVP price of each item is also listed on the guide which totals up to $77.64 for our Oct/November 2024 box. Each box also comes with a discount which is 20% here for all the items on the fuelgood.com website. Our box doesn’t have their so-called “hero” product which could include a bike light or other high-value accessory. Instead the box mostly contains food, drink mixes as well as a few body care items. You have the popular Gu Stroopwafel as well as Boom Gel apple gel and other snacks. The high-priced items here are the Gu Magnesium Plus capsules which retail for $19 and the $18 cooling therapy gel. It’s a nice mix of recovery and on-bike nutrition that can be used on short or longer rides.
THE VERDICT
If you like surprises or are looking for a good gift option, subscription boxes like this RiderBox are a great choice. You get to try a variety of products you might not normally try and you receive discounted prices to purchase additional supplies for items you like. However, as with any subscription box, you’ll also receive items or flavors you don’t really want which can negate any discount the box actually offers. The benefit of the RiderBox is that the 20% discount can add up pretty quickly if you are restocking your hydration or nutrition items for the season and could make buying even a single box worth it financially. We were happy with most of the items in our box but would have liked to see a personalization option to exclude caffeinated items or other personal preferences. That said, if you’re looking for a fun gift idea or just want to try some new products and get a nice discount for other items then The RiderBox is definitely worth a shot.
