UNBOXING
The Ombraz Cammina sunglasses are shipped in a compact cardboard box with Ombraz branding printed directly onto it. Inside the box you’ll find:
- Cammina sunglasses
- Traveling case w/ microfiber cloth sewn onto it
- Instructions for adjusting tension
Thanks to the armless design, the Cammina is nearly flat which means the traveling case is a sleek fabric sleeve design rather than a bulky zippered hard case. Ombraz has also sewn the microfiber cloth directly into the case which means it always stays with the case.
FIT & FINISH
Visually, the Ombraz Cammina has a classic vintage design with squared off two piece lens and an offset straight nose bridge. Made in Italy, the Cammina would look at home on a model’s face strolling down Lake Como. Ombraz currently offers the Cammina sunglasses with tortoise or black charcoal frames and the option of gray, brown or yellow polarized lenses. There is also a non-polarized gray lens option that is available for either frame color. In this review we have the non-polarized gray lens with the charcoal frame which has a sleek all-black finish. The sunglasses are so distinctive that the only branding is on the elastic cord with a debossed logo. Additionally, Ombraz offers two width options for the Cammina: the regular version we have in this review or a narrow frame size for an optimal fit.
Ombraz is a unique brand that has taken the classic sunglass formula and turned it on its head by replacing temple arms with a cord. This design makes for a more robust design that can handle drops and accidents far more easily than traditional sunglasses. The corded design is also perfect for high-intensity sports as the sunglasses stay in place under any condition. For cycling, Ombraz recommends putting the cord around your neck and then putting the helmet on so that the cords are above the straps. That allows you to take the helmet on and off without interfering with the straps.
Adjusting the straps is easy once you understand how they work. To tighten them you pull the plastic sliders outward and to loosen them you pull the cords outward. Ombraz also has a lifetime cord and frame warranty which ensures you’ll never have to worry about something breaking. As far as the nose pad, the Cammina has molded the pads directly into the frame with a tapered smooth shape. There is no adjustability or rubber material like you’d find on most sunglasses as the corded design provides most of the tension to hold the sunglasses in place.
RIDING IMPRESSIONS
Despite having reviewed nearly every brand of sunglasses on the market already, the Ombraz Cammina were the first armless sunglasses we’ve worn. The adjustable elastic band design requires a bit of a learning curve as well as two hands to operate. Once you understand the simple sliding design it’s easy to adjust the tension to find a comfortable but secure fit. At only 22 grams, the Cammina are lightweight and comfortable sunglasses. We were impressed with the clear optics with excellent protection from the sun with the Cat 3 rating.
As with other reviews of Ombraz sunglasses we are not quite sold on the armless design. The two handed tension adjustment requires more time and effort to put on and take off compared to traditional designs. The Cammina’s retro design is also not that great for cycling as the lens silhouette is on the smaller size, especially compared to traditional shield sunglasses like the Julbo Frequency. Even with the drawbacks, the Cammina was comfortable on the bike and other sports like running as there is no risk of the sunglasses falling off. The elastic design eliminates any pressure points from temple arms and is comfortable once you dial in the tension to be secure but not restrictive.
THE VERDICT
Overall, we found the Ombraz Cammina to be a unique and well constructed pair of sunglasses. Ombraz has taken their unique armless design and combined it with a retro silhouette to create the Cammina design. At only 22 grams the Cammina has the same durable TR-90 construction and simple adjustable elastic band. We found the sunglasses to be lightweight with clear and crisp optics from the two piece lenses. While we appreciate the armless design and can definitely see the advantage of it for water-related sports, we’re still on the fence about it for daily use as it requires two hands to put on and remove. That said, the Ombraz Cammina offers a great blend of retro styling and a unique armless design that’s easy to travel with.
