Consistent with Velocio’s sustainable approach, each of the items arrived in biodegradable bags enclosed in a compostable mailer with minimal tags and no extra packing material.
FIT AND FINISH
The Utility Bib Short combines elements from Velocio’s lightweight bibshorts with built-in storage. Velocio has used their all-new ultralight weight stretch woven recycled with their high-quality and form-fitting construction. It’s an elastic yet slightly compressive material that contours around your body while still offering breathability. As with other Velocio clothing items, the Utility Bib Short has minimal branding with reflective Velocio logos and tabs on the rear. The most impressive feature of the Utility Bib Short are the cleverly integrated pockets. There are laser cut and bonded side pockets on each side of the Utility Bib Short with enough storage for large cell phones. The seams are integrated into the side panels of the bib short allowing them to blend in. An additional two pockets on the rear of Utility Bib Short are less accessible and better suited for keys or cash.
One of the most important aspects of a bib short is the chamois or shammy. A poorly made chamois will result in pressure points and leave you fidgeting on the saddle instead of focusing on the road. Luckily, the Utility Bib Short uses Velocio’s Signature chamois which can be found in many of their other items such as the Ultralight Bib Short. It’s a multi-density design with strategically placed padding to provide comfort for short or all-day rides. Anti-bacterial material and secure zig-zag stitching ensure the chamois can hold up to the stress of time. The women’s version of the Utility Bib Short also has their FlyFree technology which allows for nature stops without the need to take off the bib shorts.
ON THE ROAD
We tested both the men’s and the women’s variations and found them equally well made and comfortable on the road. The sizing charts accurately predicted our sizes and fit similarly to other Velocio clothing we’ve reviewed. Although the bib shorts aren’t quite as light as the Ultralight Bib Short they can easily be worn on cold or warm weather days with appropriate layering. The side pockets are one of our favorite features of the Utility Bib Shorts as they are very convenient to access compared to rear jersey pockets. Even with larger items in the pockets they don’t inhibit your motion or cause any discomfort which is impressive.
THE VERDICT
Overall, we found the Velocio Utility Bib Short to be practical and comfortable. The Utility Bib Short combines Velocio’s premium construction with functional side and rear pockets for additional storage. The easy accessibility of the side pockets makes them perfect for snacks or even keys. Even though cargo bib shorts like these are typically marketed toward gravel or bike packing, Velocio’s stealthy incorporation and form-fitting stretch woven fabric make them perfect for any cycling discipline. The only negatives we found with them is the premium retail price and the fact that they are only offered in black color scheme currently. That said, if you’re looking for high quality bib shorts with some storage then the Velocio Utility Bib Short is a great option.
