FIT AND FINISH
Velocio’s SE lineup of products are their special edition variations which offer limited edition colorways to their popular items. In this review we have their SE Vest which is currently available in two colors currently: black and the more interesting Midnight Blur we have here. It’s an eye-catching color scheme that blends multiple yellow, green and blue hues into a complicated graphic design. It could almost be described as a tie-dye print but the colors fade in more geometric patterns that mimic nighttime colors. The pattern on the rear is also really interesting with brighter colors and high contrast patterns along the shoulder seams.
The vest is constructed from lightweight 100 gsm windproof and water-resistant front and side panels to protect from the elements. Material wise the jersey is 100% polyester and is constructed in Italy like most of Velocio’s apparel. As with all of Velocio’s products, the fit and finish is impressive with tight seams and attention to details. There is a two-way full length front YKK low -friction zipper that makes it easy to regulate your core temperature. On the front of the vest you have a tall collar and full length front zipper. There is a subtle Velocio reflective logo on the chest for a sleek but premium appearance. On the rear you actually have pockets which is very nice to have. There are three full sized pockets that let you store snacks and gear instead of relying on jersey pockets underneath the vest.
RIDING IMPRESSIONS
While cold temperatures call for a full jacket like the Velocio Merino Air Jacket or something lighter like the Velocio One, there are days that are cool but too warm for a jacket. That’s one of the big advantages of wind vests like the SE Wind Vest. The size medium fit our 6’ 1” 165lb rider well with a race-like fit that contours around your body for a professional look. While the Midnight Blur color is a controversial choice, the yellow, green and blue hues give it a unique look and help it stand out on the road. We were impressed with how thin and packable the vest was as it can easily be stuffed into a pocket when not needed. Velocio’s decision to keep pockets on the vest also allows you to wear the vest for an entire ride and use the pockets for convenient storage. Being in the bay area, most of our rides involve micro climates with pockets of warmth and cold air through canyons which is why the SE Wind Vest was perfect for protecting our core while still being breathable.
THE VERDICT
Overall, we found the Velocio SE Wind Vest to be a lightweight and comfortable wind vest. Velocio has combined their anatomical contoured fit and unique color schemes to create a portable and windblocking wind vest. The minimalist design blocks out the wind to keep your core protected while still being thin and light enough to easily pack away. We were impressed with the unique Midnight Blur color scheme and color matched detailing. As with all of Velocio’s clothing, everything has a professional race-fit that contours around your body. The three pockets in the back as well as reflective detailing also add nice functionality to the vest. As far as negatives, the only downside of the vest is the premium retail price. That said, the Velocio SE Wind Vest offers unique color schemes and excellent protection from wind that can easily be packed away.
