UNBOXING

The KOM Cycling Quick Release Light 1000 comes in a compact cardboard box with red and black accents printed directly onto it. Inside the box you’ll find:

Note, KOM Cycling does not include an out front mount with the light so you’ll need to purchase one separately if you do not own one already before you can use the light.

MOUNTING

One of the key features of the KOM Cycling Quick Release 350 is the dual sided mounts. There is a female Garmin / Wahoo mount on top along with a male Garmin / Wahoo mount on the bottom. That means you can place a computer on top of this light or attach the light to the bottom side of an out front mount for a sleeker installation. The top mount has a two bolt plate design that sits flush on top of the light while the bottom has a single bolt puck. KOM Cycling includes a Wahoo top plate which has the tabs rotated by 90 degrees along with a Wahoo bottom puck and even an adapter. That means you can easily mix-and-match the mount with different computers or mounts. The compact dimensions of the light mean it should easily hide under a GPS computer but you will see it from the side.

The Quick Release 350 has a dual sided mount design which lets you mount it under a mount or between a computer and mount.

FIT & FINISH

The Quick Release 350 is a compact bike headlight with a rectangular profile that is designed with a clever dual-sided mount. KOM Cycling specifically designed it to seamlessly work with their out-front mounts for a flush appearance. What separates this light from other headlights is that there are mounts on both the top and bottom which allow the light to be mounted under out-front mounts or sandwiched between a computer and a mount. This is a type of headlight we’ve seen with the Fabric Lumaray, RAVEMEN FR160 / FR300, Coospo BLC100 and the Moon Sport MX in the past. The Quick Release 350 takes that familiar compact shape and COB led design and adds a more robust metal construction and brighter output.

KOM Cycling has used a rectangular flat COB LED lens with a slightly dimpled overlay to help diffuse the light.

It’s an all metal body which feels premium and has an attractive black finish. Branding is limited to KOM Cycling on top of the light and their logo on the power button. In terms of dimensions it is 1 ⅜ x 3 x 0.75” or 35 x 76 x 19mm with a rectangular cross section and sharp corners. Although the light itself is not much wider than the Garmin mount, it’s a bit thicker than other combo lights like this. There is a USB-C charging port on the bottom side with a thick rubber cover to keep water out along with a small cutout on the rear to attach the included safety tether.

As far as light output, the Quick Release 350 is rated for an impressive 350 lumen output. The lens is a simple COB rectangular grid which has a yellow appearance due to the chemicals used for the white light output. In front of the LEDs is a frosted cover that helps diffuse the light and has a grid-like texture. The lens also extends along the sides which helps ensure the light is visible from side angles. Unlike the Ravemen FR lights, the COB LEDs are not curved so most of the light is focused forward. There are 6 modes to choose from with 3 flashing options and 3 constant modes. One thing to point out is that the Quick Release 350 actually puts out the full 350 lumen mode in the constant mode instead of only flash modes.

USER INTERFACE

To operate the light, there is a single illuminated power button on the right side of the Quick Release 350. Pressing the button with the light off triggers the battery status checker which actually has three states. It’s blue between 61-100%, yellow from 21-60% and red under 21%. Although it’s nice to see a multi-level indicator, the blue color is a little bit confusing compared to the standard green color most lights have for a good status. Holding the button on turns the light on or off while a single press cycles through modes. You can also double press to cycle through the modes in reverse which is a feature many lights do not have.

The light is only slightly wider than the Garmin mount which helps it hide underneath computers.

One of the big downsides of the light is that there is no mode memory which means the light always turns on in low flash mode. If you prefer another mode you have to always cycle forward or backward to get to it which can be annoying over time. Note, you can also use the headlight while it is charging but you will be limited to the low steady mode. KOM Cycling has also added a power bank function which lets you charge other devices with the light. You can disable the feature by holding the power button for 10 seconds until the light flashes three times.

LIGHT OUTPUT

KOM Cycling has programmed the light with three constant modes and three flash modes. There is a low (100 lumen / 10 hr runtime), medium (200 lumen / 5 hr) and a high constant mode (350 lumen / 2 hr) which puts out the maximum out of the light. The light always defaults to the night flash mode (30/100 lumen, 15 hr) which has a slow low / high flash and then a fast flash. There is also a daytime flash mode (200 lumen / 20 hr) with an irregular pattern and a high flash (300 lumen, 4 hr) that just has an on/off pattern. All the modes are easy to tell apart as they have different patterns or a big jump in output.

What’s interesting is the KOM Cycling makes the full 350 lumen output available in the high constant mode instead of a flash mode. With the COB LED design of the light we’d describe this as a be-seen light that just has a uniform glow with no spot beam or long distance visibility. For urban riding or city riding you can use the high constant mode but we’d recommend only relying on it if you ride at slower speeds or on well lit roads as you cannot see very far down the road. The Quick Release 350 focuses most of the light forward with the flat lens but has good side visibility with the extended side extensions. It does not illuminate the handlebars like the curved LED designs of similar lights though.

THE VERDICT

Overall, we found the KOM Cycling Quick Release 350 to be a well made and bright light. KOM Cycling has taken the class sandwich style light and improved with an aluminum body and flush top and bottom Garmin / Wahoo mounts. It’s a versatile design that can be used under an out front mount or sandwiched between a GPS computer and mount. We were impressed with the bright daytime flash mode and premium build quality. The 350 lumen output is one of the brightest for this segment of lights and has daytime and nighttime visibility. As far as downsides, we would have liked to see mode memory added and a thinner profile to give the headlight a sleeker appearance. That said, the KOM Cycling Quick Release 350 is a versatile and bright headlight.
