PEARL iZUMI’s Attack cycling kit

PEARL iZUMI’s Attack collection of cycling apparel offers premium details and performance fit at budget friendly price points. In this review we’ll be looking at the latest Attack Bib Shorts and Attack Long Sleeve Jersey. The Attack Bib Shorts retail for $120 and feature an upgraded polyester knit and raw edge leg hem. Additionally, the bib shorts now feature the ELITE Levitate Chamois for additional comfort on short or long rides. To complete the kit we also have the $90 Attack Long Sleeve Jersey in the matching Twilight color scheme. Constructed of 100% recycled polyester, the jersey has a modern design with performance fit. Both of the cycling kit pieces feature PEARL iZUMi’s BioViz reflective elements to keep riders visible in low light conditions.

ATTACK BIB SHORTS

The Attack Bib Shorts are PEARL iZUMi’s mid-level road cycling bib shorts. For 2024, PEARL iZUMi has upgraded the shorts with a polyester knit fabric as well as upgraded chamois. The Attack Bib Shorts are offered in five different color schemes from standard black and twilight colors, black and yellow as well as twilight Spectral graphic option. We have the twilight version in this review which has an attractive navy color with a slight sheen to it. The bib shorts have a premium solid color scheme with only a slight difference in color for the leg hems. Branding is limited to a reflective PEARL iZUMi logo on the rear which is a thoughtful touch.

The bib shorts are constructed from 80% recycled polyester and 20% spandex with minimal panels to optimize the fit. There are minimal seams to ensure a performance fit that doesn’t inhibit your motion while the raw leg hem seam eliminates any fabric bulk and helps hold leg warmers in place. PEARL iZUMi has also updated the Attack Bib Shorts to use the dual density ELITE Levitate chamois. This utilizes different materials to provide comfort on the saddle for short or long rides. The upper portion of the bib shorts also features transfer mesh upper which is a highly breathable mesh material that keeps you cool in warmer weather.

ATTACK LONG SLEEVE JERSEY

To complete the Attack kit, we also have the Long Sleeve jersey in this review. This is a traditional full zippered cycling jersey with a performance and quick drying materials. Living on the coast we chose the long sleeve version, however, it should be noted that PEARL iZUMi also offers a short sleeve version. PEARL iZUMi offers the Attack Long Sleeve Jersey in four different color schemes: gray, red, white / gray and twilight which we have here. The twilight color is a solid navy color scheme which has a slight sheen to it that pairs perfectly with the bib shorts. Branding is limited to a reflective PEARL iZUMi logo on the chest and the rear for a premium look.

The jersey is constructed from 100% recycled polyester which is quick-drying and helps wick moisture. On the front of the jersey you have a full length color matched front YKK zipper to allow for venting adjustments on the fly. Designed for cool or warmer weather, the jersey has a short color and minimal panels to reduce bulk. On the rear there are three pockets on the rear which are reinforced and have nice depth to accommodate larger items. There is no zippered pocket though which is a helpful feature for keeping keys or credit cards separated.

ON THE ROAD

For both apparel pieces our 6’1” 165lb test rider chose the size medium which is consistent with other brands we’ve reviewed. The bib shorts and jersey both fit well with a nice performance fit that contours around your body and doesn’t flap in the wind. While the sizing is good, the jersey fit doesn’t have the compressive feel and body hugging feel we’ve found with the PEARL iZUMi PRO jersey and other premium brands like Velocio. That’s something some riders may actually prefer but something we’d recommend trying out yourself if you’re able to try the PEARL iZUMi PRO jersey in person.

Aside from that, we found the Attack kit to be comfortable and well designed. The bib shorts are supportive and feel good even on multi-hour rides. For us, the upgraded chamois was well tuned to provide enough padding for comfort without being bulky. The addition of the raw edge hems also feel premium and work well to hold leg warmers in place without adding any bulk. Similarly, the long sleeve jersey was comfortable with a base layer during chilly mornings or on its own in warmer weather. The full length front zipper makes it easy to adjust ventilation while the polyester construction offers good moisture wicking.

THE VERDICT

Overall, we found the PEARL iZUMi Attack cycling kit offers great performance at an affordable price point. PEARL iZUMi has incorporated a number of premium features such as the raw edge hems on the bib shorts and the solid color scheme that give the Attack kit a high-end feel and appearance. With a variety of attractive color schemes it’s easy to find a color that matches your personality or bike. We found the bib shorts and jersey to be comfortable for short or long rides. The upgraded chamois on the bib shorts are supportive and durable with breathable materials. Similarly, the long sleeve jersey is constructed from recycled material with a performance fit. Our only negatives for the items is that the jersey lacks the more race fit of PEARL iZUMi’s higher-end PRO jerseys. That said, if you’re looking for well designed and affordable cycling kit then the PEARL iZUMi Attack is a great choice.
