As a cyclist it is important to have the right tools for repairs while being mindful of weight and bulk. The Wera Bicycle Set 15 tire lever set combines a three lever set with multiple integrated bits and features to make the most out of the space tire levers occupy. This additional functionality doesn’t come cheap though as the tire lever set retails for $39.99. Wera has incorporated their clever spring loaded 4-in one bits that combine for bit types into a single reversible bit. Additionally, there is a valve core tool as well as valve ejector for French valves and a bleeder for Schrader valves molded into the levers.

FIT & FINISH
Visually, the Wera Bicycle Set 15 looks like a standard set of tire levers with composite construction and a wide profile. There are three levers included with the set with raised sections that allow the levers to clip together for storage. Each of the levers have additional functionality or bit holders integrated inside them with specially designed cutouts. Wera has included two of their clever 4-in-1 bits: the 9506 and the 9507 bits which have spring loaded ends. That results in a total of six unique options between the two combination bits (note, the 5 and 6 mm are repeated): T25 Torx and 2.5 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 mm Hex bits which covers most simple jobs on a bike. Two of the levers have a cutout for the bits which are held in place with the spring force. The 9505 tire lever also has a valve core tool cut into it and a small protrusion which can be used as a bleeder for Schrader valves.

To use the different bits, Wera has incorporated a 1/4″ hexagonal cutout into the tire lever end to hold a bit in place. The holder goes through both bits for additional leverage and provides additional leverage for more stubborn bolts. With the composite construction of the levers, Wera recommends staying underneath 10 Nm to avoid damaging the levers. Each bit has a smaller sized bit at the end with a spring which is a clever way to integrate 4 functions into a single bit. To utilize the larger inner bit, constant pressure needs to be applied to the lever to keep the spring compressed. Some bits are also duplicated, with the 5 and 6 mm bits repeated on both levers which is a little odd but probably difficult to avoid with this design.

ON THE ROAD
One of the common sayings with multi-function products is that they do a good job of doing multiple jobs, but nothing particularly well. The Wera Bicycle Set 15 levers doesn’t quite escape that argument but it is one of the best multi-function levers we’ve used. Unlike the Topeak Shuttle tire levers which tend to be too brittle with stubborn tires, the Wera tire levers actually work well with a wide flat lip. The multi-tool functionality on the other hand is a compromise as you have less functions and shorter bit heads with the 4-in-1 design. It’s still a nice substitute for compact bike tools though, as you have the most popular Hex and Torx options. The spring loaded 4-in-1 bits are also very stable and secure inside the levers compared to the standard friction fit found on multi-function tire levers such as the Rehook Plus which tends to fall out with any motion or force.
Some of the other features such as the valve core tool are less effective than the removable tool that you find in the KOM Cycling Lever as you have little space to rotate the core tool between the spokes of standard bike tires. Otherwise, the toolset worked well for roadside adjustments and tire installations while still being as small as other tire lever sets.

THE VERDICT
Overall, we found the Wera Bicycle Set 15 multi-function tire levers offer a unique blend of functionality. Wera has take then classic tire lever and incorporated their small 4-in-1 bits for even more functionality. The spring loaded ends on the bits allow a single two-sided bit to offer four different options. It’s a clever idea that works well and reduces the amount of space needed. The spring design also helps the bits stay securely stored in the levers which is a big improvement over typical friction fit designs. We found that the levers worked well making the tire lever set a great substitute for smaller multi-tools. The main negative is the higher price of the levers and the fact that there is repeated functionality in the 4-in-one bits. That said, for riders that value space and weight saving the Wera Bicycle Set 15 is a good option.
