FIT & FINISH
Visually, the Julbo Streets sunglasses have a classic lifestyle design with two piece lens design. The frame design has a classic shape with smooth corners and straight temple arms. These have a medium coverage with smooth corners that looks great in any setting. Julbo currently offers the sunglasses in four different frame options with specific lenses: black, translucent black, translucent gray and tortoise brown which we have here. The tortoise brown frames are the classic semi-transparent design with brown and tan coloring that pops in the sunlight. The frame material is a bio-sourced Rilsan which is lighter and stronger than plastic frames. Branding is limited to Julbo logos on the temples with black accents.
Julbo offers the sunglasses in quite a few options from polarized Spectron options to the photochromic REACTIV 1-3 version. We have the Spectron 3 Polarized lens which has a brown base color and 12% VLT which is category 3 level filtering. While we don’t recommend polarized lenses for cycling, it’s a great option for driving, water related activities and other sports. The brown base tint works well in urban environments where it adds contrast to roads to see debris or potholes. As with all Julbo sunglasses, the Spectron lens has great clarity with a uniform finish that helps enhance colors and protect against the harsh sun.
The sunglasses have simple straight temples with auto lock hinges that snap in place. This makes it easier to put on and take off the sunglasses with a single hand. The temple arms also bend inward with a thin Grip Tech rubber material that provides a non-slip surface. It’s highly flexible so it can accommodate a wide variety of face shapes. Unlike cycling sunglasses that come with removable nose pads or ratcheting designs, The Streets has a simple molded nose pad. There is a thin strip of the Grip Tech rubber for additional padding directly on the nose pad area.
ON THE ROAD
With their classic styling and performance features the sunglasses reminded us of the ROKA Lockhart as a great everyday pair of sunglasses. Unlike Julbo’s other cycling sunglasses like the Density or Edge, The Streets have a compact two piece lens design that looks good in nearly any setting. We found the sunglasses to be perfect for running errands and driving as the Cat 3 lens blocks out the sun and versatile enough for overcast days. The polarized lens is distortion free and helps increase contrast and enhance colors. At only 24 grams the sunglasses are also quite light and can be worn all day without any discomfort or pressure points. For our face, the simple molded nose pads worked well and held the sunglasses in place even while riding over harsh roads.
THE VERDICT
Overall, we found the Julbo The Streets sunglasses to be comfortable and stylish. Julbo has taken their excellent Spectron and REACTIV lens options and incorporated them into a classic lifestyle design that can be worn anywhere. We found the sunglasses to be lightweight and offered excellent optics. The sunglasses offer a light 24 gram weight with a flexible yet durable Rilsan frame. We were also impressed with the little details like the zippered hard case, fabric carrying bag and the auto-locking temple arms. The only negative with these sunglasses is that there is no mirrored lens offered. That said, the Julbo The Streets sunglasses offer a great combination of retro styling with modern performance.
